Google Duplex is a new Assistant feature that can carry out specific tasks for you over the phone. All you have to do is launch Google Assistant on your phone and say something like, “Book a table at a restaurant,” and Duplex will do the rest. The AI feature will ring the restaurant place and make a reservation in a natural, human-like voice. After the call, you’ll get a notification on your phone confirming the reservation. Duplex is a completely automated system that places calls on your behalf, complete with a natural-sounding human voice instead of a robotic one. Furthermore, Duplex is able to understand "complex sentences, fast speech and long remarks" according to Google.
It feels like the beginning of something massive: A robot that sounds so lifelike you need an actual disclosure in order to determine you’re speaking to a computer is a powerful thing. The fact that it could, theoretically, handle all of your phone calls someday and free your time for other things you care about is an exciting idea. But Duplex can’t handle everything, and so it will be paired with a bank of human operators who can take over a call if it goes sideways. Google Duplex is a complicated technology. The company has to make sure it works as advertised before releasing it, otherwise, it will do more harm than good. Depending on how far the development of Duplex is, it’s possible we’ll have to wait for quite some time before it hits our devices.
